University of Jammu celebrates National Girl Child Day

JAMMU: To commemorate the National Girl Child Day, the Centre for Women’s Studies, University of Jammu, organized an online Symposium Competition on the topic ‘India at Hundred: Women in India in 2047’ for the students of local Colleges and the Department of University of Jammu.

National girl child day was initiated by the Ministry of Women and Child Development and the Government of India in 2008 with the purpose to spread awareness among people about the inequalities girls face in society.

This mission also aims to raise awareness among people over the country to promote awareness about the rights of the girl child as well as the importance of girl’s education, health, nutrition and safety.

The program began with the welcome address by Prof. Vishav Raksha, Director, Centre for Women’s Studies who after welcoming the participants gave a brief introduction of the Centre and its working. She stressed on the importance of Giving due recognition and respect to the girl child and furtherhighlighted the importance of today’s event to understand women in the future India through the perspective of the young generation.

Prof. Jasbir Singh, Dean Social Sciences and Controller of Examination, University of Jammu who was the Chief Guest of the event, spoke about the importance of this day and how it was started. He pointed out that it is a day to not only understand the condition and discrimination faced by the women and girl-children but also a day to understand the society through the lens of Women.

He stressed on the Sensitization of all irrespective of gender and said that in coming times women shall be leading in all spheres of life and deal with the upcoming challenges efficiently along with men as partners in all spheres.

Prof. Parkash.C. Antahal, Dean Students Welfare University of Jammu who was the Guest of honour for today’s event, spoke about how women were a part of society even before and during but the written history has not given recognition and justice to the works of the women.

By 2047 he wishes to see women leading in every field and all spheres of life.

He also mentioned that the unskilled and invisible work done by women must be acknowledged and should be included in our nation’s economy by 2047.

The jury members for the said event were Dr. Aruna Sharma a renowned Hindi Writer and Dr. Shubra Jamwal, Asstt. Professor and Literary Expert of English.

Dr. Aruna Sharma spoke about the position of Women in the society and emphasized that there is dire need to understand the importance of the women supporting women. She also recited a poem on the position of women.

Dr. Shubra Jamwal also stressed upon the Gender Sensitization among the masses and said that it very important to conduct such activities from time to time to bring change in the society. She further applauded the efforts of the Centre to organize such programs and appreciated the participants for their active participation as well.

A large number around 90 Students, Scholars and faculty members from the different Colleges and departments of University of Jammu joined the program. About 16 students participated in the competition.

Harsimrat Kaur from the Department of Sociology and Aaina Sharma from the Department of Mathematics, University of Jammu both secured first position. Riya Kaw from GDC, Paloura and Jagmeet Kaur from the Department of Economics University of Jammu secured 2nd and 3rd positions respectively. Shiwani Kamal from the Department of Environmental Sciences secured Certificate of Appreciation.

The Participants very enthusiastically shared their views and deliberated on the issues like Sexual Violence, Girls Education and Health, Menstrual Hygiene, Self Defense for Women, Division of Labor, and Abolition of Dowry etc.

They gave positive feedback for the event and showed their keen interest for their participation in the events to be organized by the Centre in the future as well.

Prof. Vishav Raksha, Director, Centre for Women’s Studies, declared the result and congratulated the Winners and applauded the participants for taking keen interest in this event and presenting their views very well on such a relevant theme.

Prominent among those who were present in the program included Prof. Aekta Gupta, Principal GDC, Marh, Dr. Parmil Kumar, Dr.Hema Gandotra, Dr. Shakun Sharma, Sh. Arvinder Amn, Ms Kajal Kalsi, Ms. Diksha Nargotra, Dr. Gopal Sharma, and other faculty members.
