J&K/NIA attaches house of Hurriyat leader in Srinagar

Srinagar JUNE 13: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Tuesday attached the property of Ayaz Akbar, jailed leader of the Hurriyat Conference, in Srinagar. The attachment was carried out on the basis of an order passed by the NIA court in Delhi on May 31.

Akbar was a confidant of the late Syed Ali Shah Geelani and acted as a spokesman of Hurriyat(G)—Hurriyat’s Geelani faction—for many years.

The attaching of the Hurriyat leader’s property comes a day after the NIA attached 17 properties of businessman Zahoor Watali in Handwara Kupwara on charges of terror funding.

The NIA has launched a crackdown against terror funding in Jammu and Kashmir after the revocation of Article 370 and many people have been arrested and their properties have been attached.

Senior separatist and JKLF leader Yasin Malik was awarded life sentence in May last year, in a terror funding case. Malik is also facing trial in the killing of four IAF men in Srinagar in 1990 and the kidnapping of Rubiya Sayeed, the daughter of then home minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, in 1989.
